Relating to the Types of Plan and Eligibility
Who is eligible to enroll?

For Single Trip policy

Individual Plan:

All individual customers, family members or friends aged 12 years or above and who are residing in Hong Kong with valid HKID cards.

Family Plan:

Includes the insured person, his/her spouse and/or legal child(ren). The insured/spouse must reside in Hong Kong with a valid HKID card and be over 18 years of age on the departure date. Legal child(ren) includes stepchild(ren) and/or legally adopted child(ren) who is/are Hong Kong resident/s and on the departure date he/she/they is/are 1) at least 3 months of age and below 18 years of age (or below 23 years of age if studying full time in a recognized institution), 2) wholly dependent on the insured or insured’s spouse for financial support and not gainfully employed in any way and 3) unmarried.

For Annual policy

Individual Plan:

All individual customers, their spouse, their parent(s)/parent(s)-in-law or child(ren) aged 18-70 years old who are residing in Hong Kong with valid HKID cards.

Family Plan:

Includes the insured person, his/her spouse and/or legal child(ren). The insured/spouse must reside in Hong Kong with a valid HKID card, and be between 18-70 years of age on the commencement date of insurance. Legal child(ren)includes stepchild(ren) and/or legally adopted child(ren) who is/are Hong Kong resident/s and during the period of insurance he/she/they is/are 1) at least 3 months of age and below 18 years of age (or below 23 years of age if studying full time in a recognized institution), 2) wholly dependent on the insured or insured’s spouse for financial support and not gainfully employed in any way and 3) unmarried.

If I am traveling with my friend, do we need to buy separate travel insurance policies?

For Single Trip policy

Individual Plan:

You can issue one policy to cover both you and your friends. In this way, you only need to enter the information once and pay the premium once. Both you and your friend(s) will be covered under the same policy.
OR
You can issue separate policies individually. In this way, you need to enter the information and pay the premium individually. Each individual will be covered under his/her own policy.

Family Plan:

Separate policies must be issued for Family Plan and Individual Plan policies. So if more than one family wishes to enroll for Family Plan, then each family has to be issued a separate policy. Individuals not forming part of the family unit can enroll in the Individual Plan as above stated.

For Annual policy

Individual Plan:

Each person must be issued with a separate policy.

Family Plan:

Each family must be issued with a separate policy.

If I am traveling with both of my parents, do I need to buy a family policy?

Family policy covers family members who are traveling together including the insured person, his/her legally married spouse and/or legal child(ren). The insured and spouse must reside in Hong Kong with a valid HKID card and be over 18 years of age on the departure date. Legal child(ren) includes stepchild(ren) and/or legally adopted child(ren) who is/are unmarried Hong Kong resident(s), and on the departure date he/she/they is/are at least 3 months of age and below 18 years of age (or below 23 years of age if studying full time in a recognized institution).

 

If you are over 12 years old, but not fulfilling the above mentioned criteria, you may consider purchasing an individual plan for yourself and the other one for your parents to enjoy the coverage.

Can I purchase the travel insurance the moment I arrive at my travel destination?

No, you have to purchase the travel insurance before you depart from Hong Kong.

My family will be traveling with me at the outset but I have to return to Hong Kong earlier than them. Can I still enroll under the family plan?

Yes, but the premiums will be based on the last person’s return date and your own coverage will end as soon as you reach your residence in Hong Kong. Please note, if under the Annual Family Plan Cover, the insured child(ren) has/have to be accompanied with his/her/their parent(s) during the journey in order to be covered.

Relating to Coverage
Personal Accident
Are children entitled to 100% benefit under the family plan?

Yes, children under the family plan are entitled to 100% benefit (Except Section A. “Personal Accident”). However, please note that there is a 300% aggregate limit which applies to the Personal Accident Benefit under the family plan. Which means, if more than one family member is involved in the same accident, the total liability for all insured persons involved in such accident shall not exceed 300% of the largest sum Insured which applies to any member of that family.

What do you mean by public conveyance?

Any mechanically propelled carrier operated by a company or an individual licensed to carry passengers for hire.

Sport
Are hazardous activities/sports such as bungee jumping and scuba diving excluded from the cover?

No, unless the activity you participated in are: (a) professional sports events where an Insured Person would or could earn income or remuneration from engaging in such sport, (b) any stunt activity or (c) racing, except on foot or (d) any kind of climbing or mountaineering necessitating the use of rope or guides.

Will you cover my traveling time to a car racing activity during my trip?

Yes, you will still be covered whilst you are traveling to a car racing activity. Only accidents which happen during the competition period will be excluded.

Am I covered for GO-carting which is not car racing?

Yes.

Medical
Am I covered for Swine Flu (H1N1) by the policy?

There is no exclusion for Swine Flu (H1N1) according to the policy terms and conditions. Claims for medical expenses can be made as long as the incident happens during your trip.

Is sickness covered during the journey?

Yes, provided that it is not a pre-existing medical condition and you have contracted such illness while on your journey.

What are “Follow-up Medical Expenses”?

This means medical expenses incurred overseas arising from bodily injury or sickness and that same bodily injury or sickness still requires treatment by a physician after returning to Hong Kong. You can claim for treatment received within 90 days of your return to Hong Kong.

What is “Chubb Assistance – Emergency Medical Evacuation and/or Repatriation”?

Where a physician certifies that bodily injury or sickness renders an insured person unfit to travel or continue with their journey or is a danger to their life or health, Chubb will pay the actual cost of the insured person’s emergency medical evacuation and/or repatriation and associated medical services and medical supplies.

What number should I call for Emergency Medical Evacuation?

In the event of a medical emergency, please call the 24-hour emergency hotline at (852) 3723 3030

If the evacuation is caused by a pre-existing medical condition, will I still get the service as described in this section?

Though the case is not covered under the policy, the insured person can contact the insurance company which will assist to arrange services like evacuation and repatriation. However, all expenses incurred in such evacuation or repatriation will be borne by the insured person or insured person’s family.

Will the insurance company arrange for medical bill settlement directly with the hospital if the amount is high?

Yes, it is possible, provided that the insurance company is able to verify that the accident or sickness causing such hospitalization is covered by the policy.

Pregnancy Related Medical Expenses
I am pregnant. Will I be covered for any pregnancy-related matters while I am traveling overseas?

Yes, if pregnancy-related sickness, after first trimester of pregnancy only, occurs while you are traveling overseas, the insurance company will reimburse those related medical expenses. But this benefit does not apply to any pregnancy-related sickness/ treatment that you seek in your home country or upon your return to Hong Kong and does not apply to a One Way Journey.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption
Can I claim for expenses incurred if I cancel my journey?

Yes, you will be covered for the following events that occur after the single trip policy has been purchased or after the effective date of the annual policy, resulting in cancellation within 90 days of the date the journey is scheduled to begin:

  1. The sudden and unexpected bodily injury or sickness of an insured, his/her immediate family member, his/her intended travel companion or his/her business partner; or
  2. The sudden and unexpected death of an insured, his/her immediate family member, his/her intended travel companion or his/her business partner;
  3. The jury service of an insured; or
  4. The unexpected compulsory quarantine of an Insured;or

within one week of the date the journey is scheduled to begin:

  1. The unexpected occurrence of a strike, riot, civil commotion or act of terrorism at a destination scheduled in the journey; or
  2. Serious damage to the insured person’s principal home from fire, flood, earthquake or similar natural disaster or burglary; or
  3. The unexpected issuance of a Black Alert for a destination scheduled in the Journey at least 1 day after the date this policy is purchased and which is in force at any time within 1 week of the date the Journey is scheduled to begin.

This insurance will reimburse your travel and accommodation expenses that are paid in advance and forfeited due to this cancellation (as set out in 1-7 above). If the cancellation is caused by event 1 stated above, and if the injury or sickness DOES NOT lead to hospital confinement, then 50% of the loss of travel and accommodation expense will be reimbursed only

What is the definition of Immediate Family Member as you mentioned earlier?

Spouse, parents, parents-in-law, grandparents, children, siblings, grandchildren or legal guardians.

What is Journey Curtailment?

This means that a journey is cut short because an insured person must return to Hong Kong due to one of the following events:

  • His/her bodily injury or sickness; or
  • The sudden and unexpected death, bodily injury or sickness of an immediate family member, travel companion or business partner; or
  • He/She being the subject of a witness summons during the journey, notice of which was received by him/her during the journey; or
  • The unexpected occurrence of a strike, riot, civil commotion or act of terrorism during the journey at a destination scheduled in the journey; or
  • Serious damage to the insured person’s principal home from fire, flood, earthquake or similar natural disaster or burglary, which occurs during the journey, or
  • The unexpected issuance during the journey of a Black Alert for a destination scheduled in the journey, or
  • Death of the insured person.
In what circumstances will I be covered for journey rescheduling (Travel Re-route)?

In the event that the journey has to be re-routed because of the unanticipated occurrence during the period of insurance of a strike, industrial action by the employees of a public conveyance, riot, civil commotion, adverse weather, natural disaster, mechanical fault of a public conveyance or epidemic at the scheduled destination, we will pay the reasonable additional travel fare and/or accommodation incurred by an insured person to enable him/her to arrive at his/her scheduled destination.

Delay Coverage
In the event of any travel delay, am I covered?

If the journey is delayed for at least 8 consecutive hours due to adverse weather, natural disaster, riot, civil commotion, act of terrorism, strike, industrial action involving the employees of the operator of a public conveyance, mechanical fault of a public conveyance or hijacking during the journey, we will pay the cash allowance for each consecutive 8-hour period of delay.

Do I get cover for any baggage delay?

Yes, if any of your baggage is undelivered to you for more than 6 consecutive hours, you will be reimbursed for the expenses incurred for the purchase of essential toiletries and clothing up to HK$1,000.

Personal Baggage and Money
Does it cover any accidental damage to my camera during the trip?

Yes, the plan will cover up to HK$3,000 of the repair costs.

Does the plan cover my laptop if I take it with me on the trip?

Yes, the plan will cover up to HK$10,000 for the loss or damage of your portable computers.

Is there any cash cover under this plan?

Yes, the plan will cover up to HK$1,500 of your personal money. But please note that the loss must be reported to the police within 24 hours after the incident.

What will be classified as “Personal Money”?

It means cash, banknotes or traveler’s cheques.

What is the “Home Content” cover?

While your principal home is uninhabited during your trip, this plan will also cover up to HK$20,000 loss of or damage to your household contents as a result of fire.

Outbound Travel Alert
If a Black Alert is issued before my Journey, what kind of coverage is provided for me?

If a Black Alert is issued before your Journey, the following benefits are provided for you:

  1. Trip Cancellation coverage is provided if you decide to cancel the Journey and all travel and accommodation expenses which have been paid for in advance or which are irrecoverable, plus any imposed cancellation fees, can be reimbursed. (Coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of Outbound Travel Alert Extension.
  2. If you choose to cancel your Journey and you do not suffer from any financial loss, you may cancel your travel insurance policy with a full refund of premium.
If a Red Alert is issued before my Journey, what kind of coverage is provided for me?

If a Red Alert is issued before your Journey, the following benefits are provided for you:

  1. Trip Cancellation coverage is provided in the event of Strike, Riot, Civil Commotion etc, as set out in your policy wording. In these circumstances, if you decide to cancel the Journey, all travel and accommodation expenses which have been paid for in advance or which are irrecoverable, plus any imposed cancellation fees, can be reimbursed. (Coverage is subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your original policy.
  2. If you choose to cancel your Journey and you do not suffer from any financial loss, you may cancel your travel insurance policy with a full refund of premium.
If an Amber Alert is issued before my Journey, what kind of coverage is provided for me?

If an Amber Alert is issued before your Journey, the following benefit is provided for you:
Trip Cancellation coverage is provided in the event of Strike, Riot, Civil Commotion etc, as set out in your policy wording. In these circumstances, if you decide to cancel the Journey, all travel and accommodation expenses which have been paid for in advance or which are irrecoverable, plus any imposed cancellation fees, can be reimbursed. (Coverage is subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your original policy.)

If a Black Alert is issued during my Journey, what kind of coverage is provided for me?

If a Black Alert is issued during your Journey and your trip is curtailed as you need to return to Hong Kong directly as a result, travel expenses which have been paid for in advance or which are irrecoverable, plus any imposed cancellation fees, can be reimbursed. (Coverage is subject to the terms and conditions of Outbound Travel Alert Extension.)

 

If you choose to continue your Journey, you will still be covered under your policy for personal accident, medical expenses, assistance services etc, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your policy. (Coverage is subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your original policy.)

If a Black / Red /Amber Alert is issued and I decide to continue with my Journey as planned, what kind of coverage is valid for me?

If a Black / Red /Amber Alert is issued and you decide to continue with your Journey as planned, you will still be covered under your policy for personal accident, medical expenses, assistance services etc, subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your policy. (Coverage is subject to the terms, conditions and exclusions of your original policy.)

If an incident occurs and I am unable to return to Hong Kong as planned at the end of my Journey, can I extend my travel insurance?

Yes, the Period of Insurance will automatically extend for a maximum ten (10) consecutive days if the circumstances are out of the Insured Person’s control.

Personal Liability
What is “Personal Liability”?

It refers to a legal obligation imposed on the insured to pay compensation to a third party for an accident occurring during the period of insurance which causes bodily injury to any other person or destruction of the property of others.

Relating to Premium Discount, Refund and Payment
Am I entitled to any refund if I decide to cancel my policy after I make a travel claim?

There is no refund on Single Trip covers unless such cancellation is caused by RED or BLACK Alert that is suddenly issued to your scheduled destination. For Annual cover, the insurance company will arrange the premium refund as per the terms stated in the policy if the policyholder wants to cancel his/her policy; however the refund mechanism shall not apply if any claim has been made.

Can I use another credit card for premium payment?

Yes, you can.

Others
Is there any excess applied?

Chubb does not impose any excess on American Express Premier Travel Protector.

Do you exclude Terrorism?

No, we do not exclude terrorism, except if it involves the use of nuclear, chemical or biological agents.

Am I covered on the way to and from the airport in Hong Kong?

Yes, you are covered on the way to and from the airport (max 3 hours each way).

Does the plan cover natural disasters like tidal waves and earthquakes?

Yes, natural disasters such as tidal waves, earthquakes, etc are covered under this policy.

In what circumstances will the policy be extended automatically?

The coverage will be automatically extended for a maximum of 10 days without charge if the duration of the journey is exceeded for any reason outside your control.

I understand that I also have some sort of travel coverage under my American Express Platinum / Centurion Card, is it possible to make claims under this travel insurance and also the travel cover from these Cards?

In general, for coverage like Accidental Death, Permanent Disability or Hospital Income benefit, the insured person can make a claim under both insurance. However, for coverage subject to the reimbursement of expenses incurred, you should make a claim under one of your travel insurance policies first, and if such policy cannot cover 100% of your claim, then you can make a claim under the other travel insurance for the balance.
